Soothing Spiced Smoothie with Turmeric

Spiced Smoothie with Turmeric

Smoothies and I have an off-and-on relationship.  It makes no sense, really, because I continue baking all year long.  Meanwhile, my blender, which can deliver healthy results much more rapidly than an oven, gets neglected in the corner of my counter top.  Smoothies are something I hope to make a more regular part of my days in the months ahead.  Inspiration for a simple smoothie spiced with turmeric came from Aimee’s Spiced  Brown Rice Pudding and an article on the health benefits of turmeric at Delicious Obsessions.   With its warm, late autumn spicing, this latest creation will definitely keep me coming back.

Though I could have waited until diet and detox season in  January to share this drink, I decided that now is–paradoxically–the perfect time for such a smoothie.  Starting or rounding out a hectic day with a anti-inflammatory boost could help counteract the junk that inevitably will cross my lips during the holiday season.

So I wonder–are smoothies a seasonal thing for you?  And have you ever put spices in your smoothie before?

  • 1 cup almond and/or coconut milk (or other milk of choice)
  • 1 banana
  • 1/3 cup cooked sweet potato puree, chilled, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • pinch of ground cloves, optional

  1. I’m not sure about a seasonal thing, but I tend to go through a month where I crave smoothies, then a month of juicing and back to smoothies etc. I don’t know if it’s a boredom thing or my nutritional needs but it’s interesting either way!
I also use spices in my smoothies, turmeric is a great one to blend up and I love how you’ve used it with other aromatic spices – I’m sure it tastes amazing!
Thanks for sharing this at Smoothie OTW, I’ve bookmarked this one to try as it just looks so frothy and delicious 😀

  3. This sounds delicious! I have an on and off relationship with smoothies too. It’s not that I choose a season to make them more frequently, but that I seem to completely forget about my blender. Just this week I began trying green smoothies for the first time, which I’ve surprisingly liked. Your recipe sounds amazing- a happy change for a time when I want dessert but should probably not go all-out. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for your comment! And if your green smoothies results end up in a post, you could join the Smoothie OTW link-up too. This week everyone must be busy baking or shoppping, but it would be nice to keep the smoothie ideas going.
