Chai Cholkladbollar {Chocolate Oat Balls}

Chai Chocolate Balls {Chokoladbollar}

No-bake, chocolatey, and delicious. What more could a half-Swedish snack-aholic ask for?  Apparently chocolate oat balls are also quite popular in Sweden; according to Gregg, “these things are everywhere in Stockholm.”  My version of chocolate balls includes chai spices instead of coffee.

Usually Swedish chokladbollar recipes call for oats, butter, cocoa,  sugar, butter, and coffee.  But like my mother and grandmother, I don’t do coffee (though the aroma is lovely).   In the interest of making things dairy free, coconut oil or non-dairy margarine come into play instead of dairy butter.  Whatever your ethnic roots, chai-spiced chocolate bliss awaits you in about 10 minutes.  Smaklig maltid!

Chai Chocolate Balls

Recipe for Chai Chocolate Balls {Chokoladbollar}

  • 3 tbsp coconut oil or vegan margarine, melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups quick oats
  • 2 tbsp steeped black tea (liquid)
  • Chai Spice Mix (adapted from Amana Living and Have Stand, Will Mix)

    • 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
    • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
    • 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
    • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp chopped dried cherries, optional
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut flakes

  1. Blend together oil or margarine, brown sugar, and vanilla.  Add cocoa, oats and tea.  In a separate small bowl, blend spices and then add to the main batter mixture.  Fold in dried cherry bits if using.  Stir well.
  2. Scoop out about 2 tablespoons of batter and compress it tightly in the palm of your hand to form a ball.  (The batter will be sticky and so will your hands, so it is best to wait to coat the balls with coconut until all the balls are formed.)  Roll balls in coconut flakes to coat.  Cover and chill chocolate balls until ready to serve.

    1. Addicting, yes, and super easy! I am going to have to make another batch and double the recipe. Thanks for pinning it and for your kind words. Happy snacking!

    1. They are too simple not to make! And you can lick the dough off of your fingers if you are so inclined, since there are no eggs involved. Thanks for your kind words!

  1. Aren’t these pretty and festive! I love the idea of having them on a holiday table. Oats, coconut, dried cherries, chocolate…everything delicious! Thank you for the recipe!

  2. These look fantastic – and a healthy choice. I remember eating chocolate rum balls at Christmas when I was a kid and always wondering if they would make me drunk if I ate enough, lol.

    Are they celebrating the Grey Cup victory all over Saskatchewan today? I’m guessing it’s quite a party.
